All companies who have storage equipment on their premises such as racking, cantilever racking, shelving and mezzanine floors must have a trained employee who has attended a SEMA awareness course known as a PRRS (Person Responsible Racking Safety), however they will also require an independent expert inspection every 12 – months. Below is an explanation of the two job roles, these are: –

A PRRS (Person Responsible Racking Safety) have only attended a 1 – day basic training course to establish damage tolerances. Their duties are to carry out regular weekly / monthly inspections of racking, cantilever racking, shelving and mezzanine floors and record their findings. Depending upon the severity of the damage they should arrange for damaged items to be monitored or repaired.

A SEMA approved inspector known as a SARI is the storage equipment industry’s leading and most recognised qualification, trained to carry out annual ‘Expert Inspections’ to meet current legal obligations. All SEMA approved inspectors have suitable Professional Indemnity insurance cover and produce reports in accordance with SEMA Guidelines.
Furthermore, all inspectors can provide advice on load notice signs, general housekeeping and recommendations including any safety measures that can be implemented in advance to minimise repair costs and promote safety within the workplace.
